EgyptAir Boeing 777 Catches Fire at Cairo Airport

An Egyptair Boeing 777-200ER aircraft that was being prepared to a flight to Jeddah from Cairo, caught fire at the Cairo international airport today.
The aircraft had about 300 passengers, all of whom were safely disembarked according to the airport authority. The fire fighter teams had successfully contained the fire. According to the early reports, the fire had been caused by an electronic short-circuit in the aircraft’s cockpit. The aircraft had been parked at the gate F7 at the airport.
The aircraft, SU-GBP (LN71), named ‘Nefertiti’, had been delivered new to EgyptAir in 1997. It had already operated a flight to Dammam, also in Saudi Arabia, this morning – according to ACARS data.
The flight, MS667, which was scheduled to depart at 0915 local time, finally departed at 1343, with a different aircraft. Damage to the aircraft is unknown at this stage.
