Iceland Airspace Closed due to Ash Cloud
Following the eruption in the Grimsvötn volcano yesterday afternoon, the airspace of Iceland has now been closed due to the ash cloud now present – according to Eurocontrol.
The volcanic ash cloud is reportedly now at a height of 12km, approximately 45,000ft. which could affect aircraft overflying. However, it is expected that the trans-Atlantic flights will not be affected.
Keflavik airport too has been closed, as per the reports.
Eurocontrol will be issuing an update at 1300UTC.
In April 2010, when the Eyjafjallajökull volcano erupted, it caused airspace over most European countries to be closed, creating a chaos in European air transport.
Let’s hope that this event does not turn out to be ‘Ash cloud 2.0′. Stay tuned to Airline Industry Review for the latest info. Keep an eye on @AirlineIndustry.
